General Info

To get connected head to the Telecentre on West Island. From there you can purchase:

• Scratch Cards. These will be available in $10, $20 & $50 denominations.

• SIM Cards – If you wish to have a permanent number. User types are explained below.

User Types

The new Mobile System will have 2 types of Users. These are:

Permanent – Require a Local SIM Card which will have a permanent 04 number allocated to it. Will also make it easier for locals as other settings will be preprogrammed into this SIM. Numbers available in first batch of SIM Cards are between 0406 329 011 to 0406 329 060.

Unsolicited PrePaid – Any customer with a mobile from any network can be automatically allocated a temporary 04 number. If the customer keeps using the unsolicited prepaid number, they will keep it. However, if they do not use the system for 2 weeks then this number is lost. This is designed for visitors to the island to have a temporary number for their stay. Numbers available for this are between 0406 329 101 to 0406 329 300

Call Rates

• 30c per minute in 30 second increments to:

  • Local, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, UK, US & Canada

• 90c per minute in 30 second increments to Rest of the World
• $4.50 per minute in 30 second increments to Satellite Phones

SMS Rates

• 25c - Australia

• 50c – International

To send SMS you need to enter the full number, eg. +61406329011

For Unsolicited PrePaid users you will need to change your Text Message Centre Number to +61406329002 to send and receive SMS.

Outstanding issues (as at 27th June)

• SMS – routing of incoming SMS has not yet been finalised with our Gateway Provider. We have not been given a timeframe when this will be completed, however, we envisage it will be completed in the next few weeks. In the interim:

  • SMS from Cocos Mobile to Cocos Mobile & off-island mobiles will work
  • SMS from off-island mobiles to Cocos Mobiles will not work.

• Optus – Optus has yet to complete routing from it's network to Cocos Mobiles. Until this is complete calls can not be made from Optus to Cocos Mobiles. This should be complete in the next few weeks as well.
  

• Phones that have issues:

  • Chinese handsets (HTC, YTZ) may not be able to add credit with *#132#<pin>#. There is a Handset available in the TeleCentre where you can add credit for your phone.
  • Nokia's – Some very new high-end models work OK, but seem to need a
    reboot every time you issue a command (e.g. *#132# to get your
    balance).
  • Sagem - you can add credit and call OK, but they will never let you query
    your balance.

Temporary In-dial Numbers

The Temporary number range is still active, however, it is advisable to use the mobile number for inbound calls.

The range is 08 6500 2xxx

This will effectively alias each of the existing 0406 329 xxx mobile numbers with the corresponding xxx from the geographic range. For example, if somebody has 0406 329 011, then they can also be reached by calling 08 6500 2011.
